WatSEF was developed by undergraduate science students who felt that additional funding for education had to be found. In the winter of 1991, it was decided that WatSEF would be the source of that funding.

Each term student contributions of $50.00 are collected and placed into an interest bearing account. The interest that is generated annually is then used to make purchases that will enhance all Science and Optometry undergraduate labs. These purchases are for equipment that cannot be provided for in the annual Science budget. WatSEF purchases allow for students to work with new technology, comparable to equipment found in industry today. The immediate benefits to the student are the improvements to labs and equipment. The long-term benefits are substantial, as better equipment improves the value of a Science degree from Waterloo. WatSEF, and the equipment which it buys, allows students to acquire a superior education!
